Abstract
It has been reported that CRP determination is more valuable that other basic laboratory tests (WBC and differential count) in early diagnosis of chrioamnionitis with premature rupture of membranes. In a prospective study, we attempted to correlate CRP levels to other indicators (WBC and differential count) and to determine the significance of CRP in patients with premature rupture of membranes. Serum CRP levels by latex-CRP reagent technique were determined along with WBC and differential count in 50 normal pregnant women (control group) and 31 women with premature rupture of membranes (PROM group) between 28 and 44 weeks gestation, admitted to National Medical Center during the period from April, 1, 1988 through August, 31, 1988. The followings results were obtained; 1. The distribution of negative CRP level was 72% in control group and 38% in PROM group, whereas abnormal CRP level (CRP>+1) was 28% in control group and 62% in PROM group. 2. There were significant differences in CRP level between control and PROM group (P<0.001), but no significant difference in WBC and differential count (P>0.1). 3. Significant differences were noted in WBC between negative CRP cases and positive CRP cases of PROM group(P<0.001). 4. In analysis of accuracy of laboratory tests in diagnosing chorioamnionitis, CRP determination shows highly semsitive value(75%).
